Course Description

This course examines the man-made world, the impact of technology on man's drive to invent and explore solutions, the impact of technology on society and civilization, and the overall impact on the environment. The course will highlight issues and problems which future engineers will be asked to solve; Energy, Climate Change, Agriculture, and associated Ecological Economics.

Through hands on projects the course will provide you with interesting information about the engineering profession, its various branches engineering fundamental dimensions and concepts, some elementary engineering design tools, and most importantly, the power of teamwork.

My Role and Responsibility

SCN-036, 037 and 038 are the three courses held by University College of Syracuse University. As a teaching assistant for these three courses, I spend each afternoon with these high school students from all over the world. In the morning, Dr. Plumley will give lectures. In the afternoon, I will lead these high school students to do some educational activities. According to the syllabus, we had so many different plans, including delivering lectures in the classroom, showing students around in the ESF building, having a tour in the Fenner wind farm, carrying on the Compression & Tension Test in the Structures Lab, taking a tour to the Water Retention Site, etc.

I learned a lot of teaching strategies and classroom management skills from the main instructor of the three programs and the experience of maintaining my TA responsibilities.

The following details my role and responsibilities in facilitating students to learn:

  • Preparing slides about topics in civil engineering, aerospace engineering and Environmental Engineering

  • Independently leading students in these three courses every afternoon for six weeks

  • Delivering lectures or leading students to have outdoor activities
